As captain of the DEVIATES I elected to go into field, unorthodox to say the least, but with our leading run scorer still baggin potatoes down the store it was a card I was willing to play… Last match we were the form team, we know it, the HOWLERS know it, but this day was different… The truth hurts and I hate to say it but the opening partnership of Brady and Jared was a deadset blinder… Katich and Hayden were chewing their nails… Their exact total im not sure on, but it’s safe to say it topped 110…  They had us in some early trouble… A middle order melt down thanks partly to Tony and Dougy’s back to back ducks had us cheerin loudly but this stumble was resurrected by a humble Hamish Black and their fearless leader Hoops… I’m not sure what Hamish’s total run score was but it was healthy, as for Hoopers just ask him he is happy to tell ya…  The Howler’s went out to field with 224 on the board.

We had been stripped of our confidence but we had comradery those fuckers couldnt find in the pockets they were pissin in… Conno and Twiggy went out to tackle the 224… Once again scores are hazey, but we sure weren’t the team from 3 months ago… Conno gave the Howlers countless oppurtunities to send him  home but the boys wouldn’t have it, they must of liked his company…Twiggy went early, Az our West Oz darkhorse came in for a duck… Things were lookin bad… Bandman strode onto the field ready for war and he gave them thier first fight… But during his battle his fellow Deviates were falling… Swann, Coon, Sterny all gone without even a dint in the total…

This ain’t no friendly, play to win or go down swingin’… Same teams as last time, same teams for ever…The winning team takes home the prestigious ‘RV TEST MATCH TROPHY’… There isnt a player on field who wouldn’t like to sit that on top of the telly… Or as the famous quote suggests ’straight to the pool room’… Here’s the run down… All players must wear a hat… ‘NO HAT NO BAT’… Hat of the day gets the mighty Hat trophy and what a gem she is… At the end of the day all players will vote for ‘RV MVP’ and the ‘RV DOOLEY’… Winners take home a medal each… The first player to go for a duck has to rep the RV DUCK medallion until another player goes for a duck… The last duck of the day has to wear the ‘DUCK MEDALLION’ until sunrise…

Last Test we had about 20-25 per team… The new recruits know who they are and will be selected in the morning… The rest of the crew who show up are gonna have to drink beer and heckle… Spot on!

Runamuk Visuals sent a blank sketch pad over to Hawaii this season… Actually thats bullshit, Wade just took it with him and now RV’s poachin shit from it… This lil’ black book found itself in the hands of many… Some with penskills, some with quirky humour and some unknown who drew about 50 barrels, palm trees and stick figures with cans… This Book seen more of the ‘08 Hawaii season than any fly on any wall… The book is sitting about a metre from me and I can smell the wretched thing… Beer , B.O, durries, choon, tommy sauce… Its stains are what keeps the pages together… Like the your dads playboys you used to stash under ya bed… Anyhow I should shut my lips and post these fine pieces of art… Thanks too all the messy fuckers who had their scribble in the ‘RV ROCK FEVER BIBLE’.

Then there was Lee Vandal… I dont know where ‘Lee Vandal’ come from, I havent spoke to him since I started labelling all his work with it… But it beats ‘Balo’ I’m sure… I’m a fan of Lee’s art if you hadn’t noticed… If your’e not, you’re a deadbone.

I haven’t known Stu all that long… In this short time I have come to realize he is much more than that humble bloke from Tassie who won the Big Break award… To put it simply, Stuart Gibson is one of the best water photog’s in the world right now.

Photography is a strange concept… Aim, focus, click and you have captured that precise moment in time, anyone can do it, but to take a great photo you need to have an eye for it, it’s a god given talent… You can build your skills… But you cant build talent… Below is the world through Stuart Gibson’s eye.

RV: How have you been Stu?

SG: Hey mate, yeah been really good… Just got home from Hawaii last week, super fun trip but so busy over there.

RV: You just had your exhibition, how did it go?

SG: Yeah i’ve been picking some of my favourite pieces over the last 3 years, I finally pulled my finger out when a slot opened up at the Red Wall gallery at the Republic Bar in Hobart. I have 15 pieces showing, its a water theme, only one surf image in it… The rest are empty water images, put on a heap of beers for the opening, the place was packed out so I was pretty pumped on that.

RV: Was there a shot that made you think… ‘I could make a living out of this’

SG: Hmmm… I dont think i’ve got it yet… Haha, i’m strugglin’ to live off photography, but its been a bloody  fun time so far… Some of my favourite images, the ones where i’ve gone wow! thats sick!… haven’t even got a run!!

RV: Give us a rundown of your kit

SG: I use all Canon gear. Spent over $50′000 on cameras, 500mm lens, 17 to 40mm, 200mm, extenders, tripod, 2x Canon 1d Mark 11n’s, 1x 40 d, Aquatech housing, SPL housing, etc, etc.

RV: Do you get a hard time through airports with all your gear?

SG: Yeah, excess is almost gauranteed, its all so heavy, but you try and pack as much as you can in your carry on.

RV: Would it be fair to say that surf photographers are a different breed?

SG: Hahaha… Yeah very!! The more I meet the weirder they get, i’ve been told i’m one of the more ‘normal’ surf photogs… Haha, but i’ve also been told the weirdness grows with age in the industry… Scary.

RV: Gnarliest hold down?

SG: I haven’t had any super scary ones yet, if anything it would be big Pipe one arvo, so much water moving, me and a few other shooters had fisheyes on… It started bombing out on second reef,  we copped one really solid set, it just pushes you so deep, and theres always like 5 waves in the set.

RV: Your favourite 5 photogs of alltime?

SG: Trent Mitchell, Scott Aichner, Ted Grambeu, Sean Davey and Peter Donbrovski

RV: Best surfers to work with?

SG: Tassie surfers by far… They froth to shoot without gettin’ paid for it.

RV: Best places to shoot?

SG: Fiji, Tassie and Micronesia.

RV: Whats your longest stint in the water?

SG: Probably shippies… Around 6 hrs, by the end, your just a dead weight, your whole body is a cramp.

RV: Coped any flack from local crew for shooting their breaks?

SG: Few words from some paranoid crew… But Tassie wont get crowded its too cold and fickle.

RV: What’s the sweetest gig you have ever picked up?

SG: Living on Namotu island in Fiji, shooting, surfing and eating the best food of my life!

RV: Being one of the new guys in the surf photography world, did you cop any shit from the old boys when you started out?

SG: Not really, I guess comin’ from Tassie where hardly anyone else shoots I eased my way in, rather than having to jump straight in the deep end with all the big names… I think it worked well.

RV: Out of all the photogs you know, who’s the best value to hang out with?

SG: They all have there individual qualities… Alot of photogs dont seem to hang out that much… When it boils down, they’re all competition… I just cruise, i’ll hang with anyone. My mate from home Chizza, we always shoot together, i’ve spent alot of  time with Shane Peel, he talks more in a hour than I do in a day…  he’s hilarious!!

RV: A few words to describe Runamuk Visuals?

SG: Good, clean, fun… You cant beat the times with ya best mates, epic!!
