There was a time when all we did was hunt waves, smoke weed and draw shit.
With the introduction of adult life, love and loans those carefree days are over… For most of us
Lee is different than you, Lee is different than me. For most parts he still lives that life. Minus the smoke, add a beautiful wife and daughter and not much has changed. The roots of the old days are still there, but theyve just grown deeper. His surfing is bigger and his art, well his art has found a style all of its own.
Having Lee around has got the creative part of my brain storming. A concept that hit me a few months ago has come back to life and with a bit of time Lee and myself are going to launch a new project. For now its a weekend job, but if we can tick all the boxes this little idea might just mutate into something entertaining.
We started yesterday. 2 canvases, a bag of paints and brushes, the Wu, 20 beers and all the time in the world.
We kicked the fuck out of boredom. ‘Proppa’ hahahahahah
My mates are my family, its been this way since we were all grommets. It’s got us in to trouble and it’s got us out of trouble. We have lost friends, we have lost fathers, we’ve been broken and we have been mended. We bounce back.
Mule mate, we’ll see you soon. Be strong, that big heart of yours knows no other way.
One of the best Tees I own came from an Hawaiian based company called In4mation. They are now live and available here in Oz via their new place on the internet. IN4MATION
Sterlings’ Pinch my Salt is one of the only things in surf industry that isn’t taking itself too seriously. Humour will always prevail.
Ozzie has landed in cyberspace with his place of entertainment. VAMPIRATE
After days of the saddest vision I have ever witnessed, this mighty image of Queensland’s finest League player has shone some light on the darkest moments in Queensland’s history. A photo like this is a powerful thing and amongst the images that have been seen in the media it is something positive that can band our state together. Queensland always holds its head up.
If you have something to give you can donate here.
Heathy is looking to take out Waves magazines annual Black knight award. The competition has some fine contenders. Sharpy, Freestone, Cathels, Ellis, Forster, Parkes and Vlug all out to be knighted. You can check out the concept here. For now here Heathy’s video by Harry Triglone.
Duncan MacFarlane is weirder than most 20 year olds.
Most photographers are slightly weird, it seems to be a prerequisite to the job. Duncan’s brand of weird is one that continually entertains and amuses me. These shots are some of his weirdest work and if his quote doesn’t come in too high there will be one on the wall of my studio some time soon.
When I started out as a filmmaker it shit me how much some of the established surf filmmakers would heckle out the kids that were coming up, there was one guy in particular that went out of his way to make my days shooting the Quiksilver pro as hard as possible. These were guys who had travelled the world making high profile surf films heckling some kid with a handycam and a plastic tripod? But there was a handful of guys like Ryan Kenny and Pete Crumpton who were super helpful, it was these guys that ensured that if I ever got where I wanted to be I would help the kids who wanted to make a go of making films.
I first met Jimmy Graham at a store signing in Port Macquarie. Margs, Cans, Ace and Laurie were lined up out the front signing posters when Jimmy arrived all guns blazing, the kid was foaming, droppin’ jokes and burns on everyone, he was out of hand, but so entertaining we couldnt help but love the kid. Throughout the next few years he would pop up at different events and i’d get the odd phone call asking for work experience. He was a handful but he was determined to make something of himself. Years went by and I guess he grew up and I didnt hear much from him until one day word got back to me that Dingo had put him up at his house in Cooly and he was shooting all the crew from Coolangatta.
It set me off to hear that my little mate wasn’t letting go. How he found his way to calling Dingo’s house ‘home’ I dont know, but it’s a sign of a battler, a sign of commitment and passion to do what you want with your life and I put my hands together for Jimmy Graham moreso now than ever.
Jimmy is in the final stages of Josh Kerr’s new project which will be his debut film and it is one that will surely get noticed.
‘Lately I’ve been disappointed in myself, making things for the wrong reasons. I cancelled a paying job this particular saturday and skated the city until 8 at night. This clip was for the love of it. My Favorite piece yet.’ Riley
An email from Fontas Nicolas landed in the inbox overnight. It was short. ‘hello, I m submit my work’.
