I recently stumbled across an old rap song Dion Agius and myself made four years ago. We were on a boat in PNG and Dion was playing around with garage band. The rest is history, a shitty rap song. I got thinking and I want to hear your songs. It can be anything from a shitty rap song from garage band (like ours) to just you having a moment with your guitar. They have to be about shoes. If your not musically inclined I want to hear your shoe stories. Maybe the strangest place you’ve found yourself without them or somewhere you’ve left them that might have led to some strange events… I dunno you tell me. I’ll swing the winner a pair of Jake Duncombe’s pro model shoe ‘The Bender’. I’ll even throw a globe t-shirt to the runner up.

” Life’s a Bender and so is my shoe”
The Bender, Jake Duncombe’s first pro model shoe, was inspired by Jake’s nautical flare. He and the Globe design team set out to create a skateable boat shoe that was lightweight, and had mad grip, with a lightly padded tongue and ankle collar.

The Bender is a vulcanized, mid-top deck shoe equally at home on a board, in the bar, or manning the helm. It has distressed details, and a mix of canvas, suede and leather with a hand-stitched moccasin toe and is held together with Ballistic Grade Thread. Keeping with the boat vibe, there are leather laces and the lace through the heel to finish it off.

The footbed art consists of a nautical “ Terra Australis” map for extra flare points.

I got a call from Marti claiming Pedra was going to be on. We assembled a crew, organised a boat and put the plan in motion. Brook Phillips, Marti Paradisis, Michael Brennan and myself.

I packed two boards for the trip. 5’7 three fin tow board and a 6’0 shortboard with heavy glass which is set up as a quad or three fin, or if your not scared to throw it out there five fins. Ive never tried five before. It was shaped a lot thinner than I would usually ride as it is made for towing slabs. I found out though that it goes unreal in all waves even though its far too thin and weighs a tonne.

My mate Chook and James Holmer-Cross picked me up from the airport. We grabbed Homer’s ski and hit the road. We had about an hour and a half drive to where the boat was waiting for us.

The mother ship. Dave is the captain and usually uses the boat for cray fishing. My good mate Nick ‘Harry’ Harris is his deck hand and also takes the boat cray fishing as a captain on occasion. Last things to go on are the jet ski’s. Just as we were about to set off, Homer’s ski wouldn’t start. You wouldn’t believe it. We had to leave then if we wanted to get a wave at pedra this afternoon. We really needed two ski’s especially if the waves are pumping, there were five hungry surfers on the boat and 1 ski wouldnt cut it. 2 ski’s also maintain the safety factor, but that often takes a back seat when surf froth kicks in, not great at times. So we tried everything we knew about jet ski’s, but nuthin’. Jump start off the car, jump start off another ski, bleed this bleed that etc. etc. The call was made to wait for another mate to finish work and invite him to come along and bring his jet ski. He agreed.

We got Marti’s ski onboard and headed to a different spot where we’d wait for Wallbank to arrive with his ski. Harry (boat deckhand) and I went to find him in the inflatable and run aground on a shallow sandbank. It was pitch black and freezing tassie conditions… We had to push the boat off the bank and find deeper water. I was down to my scruds and was pushing a boat across sand at 12 o’clock at night.

This is Dave the captain and Brennan having a jam. Dave is playing Brennan’s iphone keyboard and Brennan is playing Dave’s guitar, both hooked up to the boats sound system. Sounded unreal, kind of gothic guitar/keyboard solo’s.

Nothin’ like some cereal and porn for breakfast. Brennan pulling the dots off first thing in the morning. The call was made while I was still asleep that the swell from the night had dropped and would be too small for pedra. I was kinda pissed off cause I’d spent a bit of coin on the boat and getting down there and I wasn’t even going to see pedra, I was keen to check it out. So I woke skeptical of what this day was going to hold.

We launched the boat and a ski and went to check out a bombie in the deep south of tassie. The swell wasn’t huge but there were a few fun ones. Marti is in the boat with his paddle board, amping to paddle into a few.

Brennan on the wave of the session. In hindsight he could have potentially got barreled on this wave going right, the wave is predominantly a left and I didn’t see another one do the same as this wave did.

Marti stroking over one on his grey shooter. I can’t remember if he got one or not this surf. It was really hard to paddle, the peak shifted and was in different spots for each set.

This is the top deck of the boat. Chook thawing out after towing into a few lefts at the bombie. It looks nice and warm here with the sun out, I remember it being freezing cold unless the boat wasn’t moving. The deck gives you an amazing view of the tassie coast. This part of the coast there are no roads, the only way in is by walking through the bush. Your pretty much guaranteed to be the only people for miles.

We looked around at a few potential spots for a while and found this. Could be good on the right swell. This day was pretty ugly and not really any water underneath to cushion your fall if you attempted to ride it. It did give is some hope we would get another surf in this afternoon.

We went to a break the tassie guys knew about. it was like iluka on steroids. 8ft plus, big wedging peak which wasn’t really handling and maxing out on the sets, we all paddled out and got a few waves each but we were getting caught inside and flogged on most waves. Not everyone was into it so we stayed in our wetties and pulled anchor and went a few bays in further. It was exactly the same set up but on a smaller scale and was handling perfectly. It was like the most perfect snapper you’ve seen with two guys out!?!? they’d trekked some 5 hours through the bush to surf this spot. They were on the money, it was firing. Here’s Marti screaming down the line on one.

You can see the wash line from the wave before how it is almost perfectly straight. There was barely a drop out of water and each wave reeled down the exact same spot. The bank comes from the river which runs along the tree line and carries you back out to the peak.

If we weren’t in steamers I felt like we were somewhere on the north coast in the middle of summer. Its a surreal set up how the small cliff with gum tree’s make a stadium like feel over the bank. I love this photo, Marti board sliding the coping.

This is the heavy, thin 6’0. This is when I realised it worked in all waves. I’d previously only towed heavy or bigger waves on it before. This made me get my standard shortboard done heavier from then on. I still have this board today and still use it often. It was the board I rode in One Month on the Moon, west oz barrel section.

Its deceiving, this wave is a decent four foot. Marti getting tunneled while I watch on jealously.

From what I can see in this strange industry is, everyone wants ‘Progressive’ surfers. Well here you go, chuck in the fact the cunt will take off on anything and is the most creative cat in the whole game and works harder than any I know of. If you are sitting there reading this and your team needs a kick in the pants chuck some stickers and a healthy bag of coin at this guy. He makes his own films for fuck sake!
